BRITISH FOOD SUPPLIES

LARGE STOCKS IN HAND.

FALL IN PRICES LIKELY.

A. and N.Z.

LONDON. Feb. 23.

The Food Controller, Mr. G. H. Roberts, stated to-day that the food stocks of the country were mainly held by the Ministry for Food, and were now being released. They included 98,700 tons of beef and mutton, 34,500 tons of canned meats, 64,600 tons of bacon, 16,000 tons of cheese, in addition to large stocks in New Zealand, which will not reach England until June, 12,400 tons of butter, ample supplies of margarine, 36-1,000 tons of sugar, and 15.000 tons of tea.

No new ration books were being printed, but it might be necessary to control meat and butter after the present books were exhausted on April 30. It was anticipated that next month would show an appreciable fall in food prices.
