HOLY LAND DELIVERED.

BRITISH THANKSGIVING,

SERVICES IN AUCKLAND.

A cabtoraji from London published yesterday stated that the Archbishop of Canterbury proposes to observe to-morrow as a thanksgiving day for the deliverance of the Holy Land. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland, Dr. j A. W. Averill, writes:-" May I suggest that to-morrow, St. Michael's Day, be ' observed as a day of special thanksgiving for the great victory in Palestine, which, means practically the deliverance of the Holy Land from the blighting influence of the Tuik and the cruelty of the German! The Archbishop of Canterbury proposes to observe Sunday as a thanksgiving day for the deliverance a*, the Holy Land, and it seems fitting that we in this distant corner of the Empire should commence the great offering of praiso and thanksgiving which doubtless will bo taken up throughout and beyond the Empire. " It is. impossible at present to realise what General Allenby's great victory may mean to the issue of the war, but that the results will be considerable is undoubted. The close of centuries of misrule and oppression is a matter for thankfulness, the deliverance of the unfortunate inhabitants j of Palestine is a matter for thankfulness,, and the blow to the prestige of Germany and Turkey is certainly a matter for thankfulness. " I desire to invite the clergy to observe to-morrow m a day of thanksgiving, or, if the notice be too short, to observe the first Sunday in October in the manner indicated." i ■ ■ as
