Mr. F. K. Lane, Secretary for tho Interior, interviewed by the representative of the Australian Tress Association, said he delighted at Australia's decision to establish' offices in America. Such a step would-be a tremendous advantage to Australia, whose possibilities, the United States was only beginning to realise. " Our relations 'during the next few years,". he said, "will improve more rapidly than during the last fifty years.' The Panama Canal brings Australia nearer in the shipping sense, and greatly increases the possibility of trade. We expect Amy tralia to co-operate with us in developing this commerce, lam deeply interested in Australia's timely plans for repatriation after the war, and in the work of the British Immigration League. America is ; contemplating similar measures, and is applying £200,000 to the preliminary programme;" .' •Mr, W. C. Redfield, Secretary for Commerce, said that since the announcement of Australia's intention to have special representation in the United States, official? at Washington had "taken greatly increased interest in the possibilities of trade between America and Australia. . " Our first tasks, as soon as ships are available," ho said, " will be the removal of Australia's surplus wheat. • The visits of Mr. W, M. Hughes, Mr. J. Cook, Mr. W. F. Massey, and Sir Joseph Ward, will lead to a better understanding, and I am hopeful thai a return visit of American statesmen to Australia and New Zealand will be : arranged.''. -'
