GERMANY'S LOST COLONIES
maSS OTTEINKABLE.
STATEMENT BY MR. LONG.
v ''Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, Okcd 10.60 m.) LONDON, Sept. 56.
Mr. Walter long, Secretary of State for tie Colonies, speaking at a dinner to "tha press delegates, mado a declaration regarding the German colonies. He said: "We are told we did not enter tho war for extension o| territory. This is ahsolutely true. We are told that these territorms must be returned to Germany. I am here to-night to say this » If these territories are returned to Germany the sacrifice of our heroes will have been made in vain, and I say the (spirits of those men will come from their graves to rebuke us if tfter the sword naa done its splendid work the pen is so cowardly as to give back what the sword has won. The Germans regard the Pacific Islands as bases for wire Jess stations, aeroplanes, and submarines. If Germany is allowed to return to the position she occupied before the war, the peace of the world will be threatened. We must make Germany understand that she has overstepped the bounds."
