AMERICANS GAIN SEVEN MILES IN NEW OFFENSIVE.

;f.' TWELVE TOWNS AND 5000 PRISONERS CAPTURED. FIRST LINE TAKEN ON FRONT OF FORTY MILES. Australian and N.Z. (Received 8.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept 26. / The Americans north-west of Verdun penetrated the enemy lines for an average depth of seven miles, and captured eight towns. They also captured over 5000 prisoners. . A later report states that the Americans have captured 12 towns. The Americans have captured Malancourt, 10 miles north-west of Verdun, Berthincourt, Montfaucon, 12 miles north-west of Verdun, also the villages of Cuisy Nantillois, Septsarges, Dannevoux, and Gercourt, to the east and north-east of Montfaucon. The Paris correspondent of the Chicago News states that the French and American offensive is the largest the two forces have undertaken together. It extends altogether along, a front of 54 miles, and was preceded by an enormous concentration of artillery fire and gas shells. All the first objectives are reported to have been taken. The attack began at five o'clock this morning. - • LONDON, Sept. 26. The French and Americans have begun a new offensive in the Champagne. The attack was launched on a front of 40 miles, on the whole of which the first line was taken.
