An offensive has been launched by French and American troops on a front of over 50 miles in the Champagne and the Argonne, including the field of the French attack in September, 1915, from the River Suippe to Ville-sur-Tourbe, and the sector between the Aire and the Meuse. In the former area the French Fourth Army has advanced four miles from the line Auberive-Ville-sur-Tourbe, while the Americans, attacking from the line of the French defence of Verdun, have gained seven *• miles, capturing Malancourt, Bethincourt, Cuisy, Montfaucon, Gercourt, and other villages.
