SOMES ISLAND MYSTERY.
ESCAPE OF PRISONERS.
BELIEVED TO BE DROWNED.
[by telegraph.—press association.]
WELLINGTON. Sunday. There is no trace of the four German prisoners of war who escaped from Somes Island early on Friday, although the island has been thoroughly searched. One theory is that they tried to swim, ar.d were drowned, the night having been stormy and the sea rough.
A large open boat drifted ashore on Evans Bay beach on Friday morning. It v thought that this may have some connection with tho escape of the Germans.
