COAL MINES DISPUTE.

QUESTION OF CONFERENCE.

CAUSE OF PRESENT SHORTAGE.

The present shortage of coal throughout the Dominion is due, the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister for Mines, stated last evening, chiefly to the rough weather which has prevailed round the New Zealand coasts for some weeks, and not to the dispute between the Coalmine Owners' Federation and the Miners' Federation.

The Minister said the mines on the West Coast lost 13 days in July on account of bad weather. Ships were etill held up on the West Coast by weather conditions. There was limited bin accommodation at the mines and when the bins were filled the mines were compelled to close down. Unfortunately a bin at the Liverpool mine, with a capacity of 5000 tons, had been destroyed recently by a landslide, and this had added to the difficulties of the situation.

Asked what the Government proposed to d» in connection with the dispute between the coal owners and the Miners' Federation the Minister replied that the question was a very delicate one, and the Government had not yet decided whether to take any action. It could not con pel a conference between the parties und>r the War Regulations.
