COLD STORAGE FOE MEAT.

POSITION IN CANTERBURY.

EXTRA PROVISION MADE.

[by telegraph —press association.]

TIMARU, Sunday. A suggestion- by Mr. E. C. Studholme, that the sheep farmers should ask the freezing companies to erect additional storage at the Smithfield and Pareora works, the fanners to provide the capital required, was considered recently by a meeting of farmers. The objection was raised that only those providing capital would be entitled to space, and that it would be better to allow the companies to erect the buildings, and for the farmers, to pay extra for storage. A committee, which was appointed to interview the companies, reported to a large meeting to-day that the New Zealand Refrigerating Company disapproved of the proposal to provide extra storage, and recommended that efforts should be concentrated on obtaining additional shipping. The Canterbury Meat Company offered to provide extra storage at Pareroa if the farmers found £1500 this month, the space to belong to the subscribers, pro rata, until after the end of tie war, when the building would become the property of the company. At to-day's meeting a letter was received from the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, reversing its earlier decision. The company now stated that it will erect at Smithfield additional storage for at least 100,000 carcases, without assistance, and without any conditions, and to carry on as hitherto on full trade lines. This offer was fully approved by the meeting, and it was decided to ask the Canterbury Meat Comply to adopt the same policy. It was stated that the Overseas Shipping Committee would not send meat ships to Timaru, and a resolution was passed urging that ships be sent here, as there are three freezing works within a convenient distance of the port.
