AUSTRIAN HOPE OF PEACE.

NO ANNEXATIONIST AIMS. EASY ROLE AS MEDIATOR. MODERATION OF DEMANDS. (Received 7.30 p.m.) Renter. AMSTERDAM, July 21. Count Czernin, former Austrian Foreign Minister, speaking in the Austrian Upper House, declared that Austria had no direct friction with Britain. Austria was less unpopular, weaker, less dangerous, and more moderate in her demands than Germany, and was fairly free from annexationist desires. Thus she was absolutely predestined to fill the rolo of mediator, but this was only possible provided she secured full confidence in Berlin. Count Czernin further said he hoped that Germany's war aims remained purely defensive. It was a mere presumption that this terrible war was being prolonged for the annexationist aims of foreign States, which would endanger the alliance.
