SUBMARINE FEW HUNDRED YARDS OFF AMERICAN COAST

BARGES SUNK BY TORPEDOES AND SHELL-FIRE. WHOLE OF CREWS RESCUED BY NEIGHBOURING BOATS Australian and N.Z. (Received 9.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 21. A submarine shelled a tugboat with a tow of barges just off the coast. The crews state that two barges were sunk by torpedoes and a third by shell-fire. The submarine fired 100 shots at the barges a few hundred yards off the shore. Several vessels went to the rescue of the crews. No lives were lost, but one man was blown off one of the vessels and a youth was injured. An eye-witness states that the submarine was 400 ft long.
