JNVESTITURE AT TOWN HALL

sad impressive ceremony. A* investiture ceremony this held by His Excellency the Governor-General in the Town Hall last evening, at a parade of 2600 territorials and cadets. Four decorations were presented. Pathos characterised the event, for nil the recipients are now deceased and tho medals were received by their next of kin. The territorial and cadet units paraded on the wharf and, to the music of a number of bands, marched along Queen Street to the Town Hall, His Excellency taking the salute inside the wharf gates. Prior to the march, the Governor-General inspected a guard . : honour of 100 men from the Coast 1 Vfeiii Infantry detachment, and before entering the hall inspected the second guard of honour of 50 Maori soldiers from the Narrow Neck camp. T. Major. D > 0., Colonel A. Plugce, C.M.G.. and Captain A. Coutts. entered the hall. On the platform were Dr. H. \V. Clear. - . Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Mr. C. J. Parr. M.P. ; Mr. W. A. Feddoc, Canadian Trade Commissioner. Mr. W. Bl'.infield, Mayor of Takapuna. and officers of the staff. The parade stood at attention while Major Sir Robert Walker read extracts from the Gazette, describing the deeds which gained the Jionours, and the next of kin mounted the platform to receive the medals from the hands of the Governor

The Victoria Cross, awarded to the late Lieutenant-Commander William Edward Sanders, R.X.R., was received by his father. Mr. E. H. Sanders, of Takapuna. Mrs. E. A. Hubbard, of Paeroa. received the Military Cross, awarded to Iter lata son. Captain Arthur Charles Hubbard, of the Auckland Regiment, for gallantry and devotion to duty. The Distinguished Service Cross, a jnaval decoration, won by the late FlightLieutenant T. G. Culling, was received foy his father, Mr. T. S. Culling, of emu era. This award was made in recognition of the late officer's services when, with two other aeroplanes, he engaged p. formation of nine hostile scouts and two-seater machines. Two two-seater machines were shot down, one by Flightlieutenant Culling, unassisted. The last presentation was that of the Military Medal, ned by the late Corporal R.
