GERMAN ATTACKS DEFEATED

GAINS BY FRENCH TANKS ENEMY PREPARING NEW BLOW ANXIOUS FOR EARLY DECISION A French communique reports a number of local enemy attacks north and south of Yilliers Cotterets Forest. Two attacks at Clarepont NSood, southeast of Novon, were repelled by machine-gun tire. Other attempts to advance on the edge of the forest from Dommiers were frustrated, and the infantry, supported by tanks, improved the French line in this section. South of the Ourcq the fighting was tierce, the enemy gaining no advantage. Both British and French commentators agree that the present pause in the battle is due to fatigue and to the necessity under which the enemy labours of bringing up artillery. A Resumption of the offensive on an e\en more violent scale is anticipated. Reuter correspondent with the French forces states that the impression made by the Americans at the Marnc is such that the Germans are certain to redouble their efforts to gain a decision before the reinforce* ments from America destroy their numerical superiority. Sir Douglas Haig reports the repulse of an enemy raid at Morlancourt, south of Albert, and successful British raids at Lens and south of the La Bassee Canal. The enemy's artilleryis active at several points.
