COMMANDER SANDERS' DEED

"ONE OF THE GREAT HEROES" LORD JELLICOE'S TRIBUTE. [from our own correspondent.]. LONDON. March 21. In a speech at Liverpool, Lord Jellicoe, referring to the awards of the V.C., said he looked upon the late Lieutenant-Com-mander E. W. Sanders, Auckland, as one of the great heroes of the war from the naval point of view. "He came to see me after he had earned his V.C., and 1 had the pleasure of shaking hands with him. The story of his deed has yet to be written, but the man who realised what his deed was was his opponent, and I am not giving away any secrets when I say that his opponent was a German. (Applause.) It was with the greatest possible grief that I heard later of LieutenantCommander Sanders having been killed in the exercise of his duty. He was a New Zealand officer, and I have had painted certain incidents of his exploit which 1 propose to send to New Zealand after the war, as a tribute to a very heroic derd." [Applause.)
