HONOURS WON IN EAST.
CAPTURE OF JERUSALEM. A. and N.Z.-Reuter. LONDON, April 11. For services' culminating in the capture of Jerusalem, General Sir Henry Chauvel has been created a Commander of the 'Bath, and Lieutenant-Colonel C. JPowles, of New Zealand, Companion of St. Michael and St. George. Awards have been made to fte following .Now Zealandars -.—Distinguished Service. Order, Captain R. P. Harper; Military • Cross, Lieutenants A. Hall, Wellington Mounted Rifles, M. E. Johnson, Auckland Mounted Rifles, R. Mackenzie, Camel Corps, and R. T. Patrick, Engineers.
Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Chauvel, commanding the mounted forces in Palestine, served in the South African War with the Queensland Forces, was mentioned in despatches several times, and created C.M.G. After further service in Australia with the Commonwealth forces, he was appointed Commonwealth representative on the Imperial General Staff. Lieutenant-General Chauvel at the outbreak of war was appointed to the command of the mounted portion of the Australian Imperial Force. Subsequent to the evacuation of Gallipoli he was placed in charge of the whole of the mounted troops operating in the Sinai Peninsula and Palestine, including the Australians, New Zealanders, awl several regiments of Imperial Yeomanry. Hi« command has been described as the largest body of mounted troops that has ever served in i any army under one officer.
