Ay address on the social work being carried out in Auckland was delivered by the Rev. F. R. Jeffreys, probation officer,' at the monthly meeting of the Auckland branch of the W.C.T.U. A letter of acknowledgment was received from Sii dames Allen, Minister for Defence, in connection with a resolution forwarded .urging the closing of hotel ,bars on the arrival of troopships in New Zealand. The meeting recorded a protest relative to a statement that largo consignments of whisky are allowed to be imported into New Zealand when needful commodities aro shut out. The remarks of Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., regarding tho undeßirabilifcy of showing pictures featuring crime to children, wore warmly commended. The New Zealand Alliance's demand for a special referendum on the liquor ouettiou was endorsed. A vote of sympathy wa< accorded the family of the kto Mr. William Richardson,
