Private, advice has been received that Private Stanley Hadfiold has. been killed in France, He was tb* third'son of Mr, Tom Hadfleld, and was well known in the Birkenhead district,: whore he spent most of his life. He wad associated with his father and brothers in the land agency business of Tom Hadfield and Sons, Auckland, and left in tho twenty-seventh reinforcement draft, His younger brother, Private Thos. Hadfleld, is also en active service in Franco, both having left toEolher. Referonco to his death was rnadoat the Birkenhead Borough Council meeting last night by the Mayor (Mr, J. Pi McP'hail). who stated that Private Stanley Hadfield was tho sou of an ex-councillor, and brother of a present member of the council, Mr. Albert Hadfiold. A vote of condo'ence with the relatives was carried, members standing in silence.
PRIVATE E. J. BATES. Private E. J., Bates, who has died of was, prior to the war, omployed in the Chief Post Office. Auckland. Ho enlisted with the Main Body, and served at the Suez Canal, afterwards taking part in the landing on '; Gallipoli,, whero he served without vounda or sickness till the evacuation. Afterwards he went to Franco with the Now Zealand Division, whero ho took part in every, engagement fought by his division till tho time of his death. Private Bates, who was born in Auckland in 1895, was iho third son of Mrs. E. Bates, Lichfield Street, Nowton, PRrVATE W J. COOKE. Private W. J. Cooke, who died of wounds in France on October 6. was tho eldest son of Mr..- W. M. Cooke, of Wanganui Avenue, Ponsonby. Ho was born in Duncdin 28 years ago, but passed his boyhood in Auckland, boing educated at the Napier Street and Normal sohqols. Prior to enlisting in the twentioth rdnfo'ecments, ho was in the employ of Mr. J.: Mines, grocer, of Herno-.Bay.; Private Cooko's youngor brother, Gunner W. '> H. Cooke, who left with . the ; twenty-fourth reinforcements, is now serving in France. -. ,-
