CASES HEARD IN AUCKLAND A kumbeh ;of | appeals for exemption and leave were considered yesterday by the First Auckland Military Service Board.

Mrs. L. T. Bolton (Mr. Prendergast) appealed on behalf of hor son, Edward Y. Bolton, dairy farmer, Rawene.' Appellant, stated that she was a widow, : and was farming 335 acres, carrying' 24 milking cows and other stock; The milking and other work was done by*her son, who was the only man on the farm. She would have no means of carrying on the farm if her son went .to camp. Exemption was granted sine die. Total exemption' was applied for. by Sydney McL. Potter, farmer, Mercury Bay (Mr. Coatcs), on the ground of occupation. Appellant said his farm was one of 350 acres, carrying a dairy herd and other stock. Ho had ono brother at the front. The land had been overgrown with fern and teatree, and if left would quickly revert to that state. The appeal was adjourned sine die. . Joseph Frederick Davis, Coroihandel, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. He stated that he had threo brothers at the front, and his father required him to work the farm. Appellant's father alsp gave evidence. The appeal was adjourned sine die. , ~.

An application for the exemption of Thomas H. Maughan, farmer, Kaitaia. at present in camp, owing to a breakdown m the health of his parents since he left them, was made by a carried sister, represented by Mr. .Hosking. It was explained by counsel that Maughan had been managing the farm prior to his enlistment. Sinco he left his parents had tried tc work the farm themselves, but were now in ill-health. They had tried to sell Hie farm, but had not succeeded. Leave until the end of January was granted, the case to bo again considered if Maughan's parents were still in ill-health. The appeal of Arthur. Eric Thomas, farmer, Dargaville, was considered. Appellant had already been granted two extensions of leave since being called last February. Appellant's father now applied for further leave to enable his son to prepare a farm so that it might be worked in his absence. A further two months' leave was granted. Roderick Guy Herbert, fanner, Pukekono, said he was working his father's farm of 166 acres, of which 100 acres were in

grass. Ho was milking 25 cows. His father and a delicate brother were unablo to do much work, and if he wont away the farm would have to be sold. His father worked as a bricklayer. . This material had tee be made up in New Zealand. This made it necessary to employ more armature- binders. It took up to five. years to train a man.
