VALUE OF GAIN LESSENED. LANDING CAREFULLY MADE. (Received 1.30' a.m.) Renter. PETBOGRA.D. Oct. 16. Well-informed circles regard Oesel and Dfigo Islands and the Gulf of Riga as lost. Nevertheless the value of Riga to the enemy to small until tho Teresten fairway to the gulf has been cleared, which is impracticable so long as the forts on the western peninsula of Oesel Island hold out. Tho Russians destroyed the fairway two years ago by sinking interned German craft laden with stone end cement. Preparations for the German landing, Tsliich was undertaken by two divisions, were made with the minutest care. It included a clever piece of trickery, enemy Eght craft succeeding in altering the position of the buoys marking the minefields between the islands and the mainland, - causing a number of Russian scouts to run ashore. In consequence warning of - t(w enemy landing could not be given.
