The Canterbury Rugby League .recently wroto to the Rugby Union suggesting that a, League team ehould meet a Rugby Union team, the match to be played in aid of any patriotic- or hospital fund. The secretary of the Canterbury Union wrote to the New Zealand Union regarding the matter, and suggested that permission should be given for the playing of such a match. The secrei tary of the Now Zealand Union replied statI ing that the required permission could not be granted, as it was considered that such a match would not be in the interests of the Rugby game. UNDER LEAGUE RULES. RAILWAY V. PONSONBY. LEAGUE CHAMPIONS DEFEATED. A considerable amount or interest was evincod in the football match between Railway, winners of the Rugby Union . championship, and Ponsonby, the championship holders, under League rules, at Victoria Park on Saturday. Tho gaino was spoilt to a certain extent by tho condition of the ground, but the play was, under the circumstances, fast and even. Railway proved to bo the winners, with a score of \2 points to their opponents' 8. Rain was falling heavily when tho boll was kicked off. The kick was unsuccessful. In the close work Railway had the advantage, but in the open play was very even. For some time no further score was : registered, but towards the end Railway were constantly attacking. In the closing stages they added three rcoro tries, the scorers being Simpson, Hing, and Courtenay. The attempts to convert were not successful.
