CANING IN SCHOOLS.

Sir, —It has b*on mentioned to me that the report appearing in Wednesday's Herald regarding the resolution passed by the Grafton School Committee, aneno the above, is capable of being misconstrued, and might be calculated to do an injustice to the staff. I wish therefore to make it quite clear 4 that the remark about caning of infants"for making a mistake in, say, reading, was merely a suppositious case, and has net actually occurred at Grafton school; that no complaint about caning was before the meeting when the matter was discussed, and that the resolution was passed for the purpose of calling attention to the existing officially recognised practice of caning in school, with a view to bringing soma reform in this direction.

D. DtrscAN, Hon. Sec. Grafton School Committee.

TIVOLI THEATRE SERVICE. Sir,— was with surprise that I learned this morning that on a question of constitutional Presbvterial procedure an appeal has "been made from the Presbytery of Auckland to the general public, through the correspondence columns of the Herald. As the Presbytery holds episcopal powers over its members and over the sessions and congregations within its bounds, it is just- a3 if an office-bearer of the Anglican cr Roman Catholic Church were to appeal to the public against his bishop • on the question of church administration, regarding which the public could not very well be folly informed. The matter is still sub judice, and the Presbytery of Auckland is the body that is responsible for dealing with it. The Presbytery is composed of Christian men, who are as anxious for the advancement of the Kingdom God as are the members of St. Andrew's session. The Presbytery may be trusted to vindicate the principles of the Presbyterian Church, and to deal justly in this matter, " and surely the minister and session of St. Andrew's could have done'evangelistic work without flouting their Presbytery in the doing it. Isaac Jolly. Ponsonbv, August, 16, 1917.
