FRENCH MAKE PROGRESS WEST OF DIXMUDE ROAD. Australian and N.Z. and Reuter. (Reed. 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 15.
A French communique states: We made appreciable progress west of the Dixmude Road, in Belgium. There is an active artillery duel on both banks of the Meuse, north of Verdun. An enemy attack west of Hill 304 was repulsed. An artillery duel is in progress in Belgium and on both banks of the Meuse. Enemy raids at different points were easily repulsed.
A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: The Portuguese, after sharp fighting, repulsed raiders, estimated to be three companies strong, east of Neuve Chapelle. Despite the enemy's aggressive tactics our long-distance aeroplanes reached and bombed their objectives and used machine-guns against the enemy's infantry..
