GISBORNE HARBOUR WORKS.
«*. ENGINEER'S RECOMMENDATIONS. [by telegraph.—own cobbespondext.] GISBORNE. Wednesday. Repobttnb upon the Gisborne Harbour, Mr. L. H. Reynolds condemned the suggested excavation works in the river, and recommended as the only method of increasing the depth of water in the inner harbour the erection of training walls and new wharves restricting the width of the channel. Even with these works he considered a depth of only • nine feet at low j water could be maintained. Mr. McI Donald, the board's engineer concurred in ■ Mr. Reynolds's lecommer.dationa in regard 'to the suggested training walls. The board has authorised a committee to make • arrangements with Mr. Reynolds to draw up a report and submit a plan for an! . outer harbour of moderate dimensions , free of nver influence and capable of I accommodating coastal shipping, a as low ' • a cost as possible. Members agreed that, ! owing to the constant silting-up of the' river, the harbour was doomed, and that, the future policy of the board must be i j directed towards the const ruction of a, j harbour free from river influence.
