Wardle, Labour member for Stockport, to the Corn Production Bill, seeking to secure the increase of the agricultural labourer's wage from 25s to OUs. the Government regards the figure fixed by the Bill M fundamental ' Mr R E. Prothero, President of the Board of Agriculture, said the Government could not accept Mr. Wardle's amendment. If pressed to a division _ they must stand or fall by the result. The (Bill was essential to our existence and I j.?'- , The minimum wage was irreI ducible, but the Wages Boards could in- | crease it. The proposed increased wa-e would impose the payment of an additional £40.000,000 on farmer*. The late Government miscalculated the extent of the submarine menace and the change* and shortages in the world's supply %f grain We could not afford a third miscalculation. , M £- Wardle's amendment was defeated by 00l votes to 102.
