GERMANS EXPECT ATTACK ON THE COAST.
DUNES ACTION MEANT TO SPOIL THE PLAN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 23.
Discussing the recent battle on the Dunes, General von Ardenne a German military critic, expresses the opinion in the Berlin newspaper Tageblatt, that the British meant to make Nieuport the starting point of an advance upon Ostend and Zeebrugge, which are bases for submarines, and a thorn in the flesh of the British. The loss of the bridges on the Yser spoilt the plan for the next great attack. The British intended that the loft wing, under shelter of the fleet, should envelop the German right, and von Ardenne forecasts that the British will proceed with their plans despite their partial failure, remarking that tremendous artillery action and other signs indicate a great British attack shortly.
