STEAMER'S ROUGH TRIP.
! WOODWORK USED FOR FIRING. I The coastal steamer Hawera had a roueh J experience after leaving the Patea Wharf last week. She grounded in the river. on. the way out and remained fast for twelve hours until towed off. The Hawera them put to sea, but soon ran into a heavy; I southerly gale. The vessel was badly; I buffeted and she began to leak considerI ably. All through the following afternoon) and evening the little boat fought her way against the gale. The bunker coal was thou diminishing to an alarming extent, and the vessel's woodwork and cabin doors were burnt to keep up a sufficient head of steam to take her to an anchorage at Kapiti Island. On reaching the island, a, message was sent for assistance, and a, few hours later a vessel was despatched from Wanganui with coal for the Hawera. The Hawera is a wooden steamer of S3 tons net and 174 tons cross, built at Auckland in 1912.
