A later German communique states : Fighting activity has increased on the Riga-Smorgon front There is strong artillery action on the Middle Stochod, east of Kovel, and on the Zlota Lipa. Russian attacks on the Kovel-Lutsk railway failed heavily. In Eastern Galicia the battle continues across the heights on the west bank of the Strypa. Russian masses succeeded in extending north the gap made in our lines the previous day. Russian attacks at Koniuchy broke before our new positions. The enemy did not repeat attacks against the heights of Brzezany. An Austrian communique states: Between the Naraiovka and the Strypa the enemy is continuously employing fresh reserves. The Russians pushed assaulting waves totalling at least 20 divisions into hand-to-hand assaults, which were mostly repulsed before our first lines were reached.
