CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. " DEFEAT FOR MOUNT EDEN. The continuation of the Auckland Hockey Association championship matches at Remuera on Saturday resulted in a defeat for Mount Eden, the leading team, by Edendale Old Boys, by 3 goals to 1. Areta and University again drew, each securing one goal, after a keen and vigorous game. The result of Saturday's matches places Mount Eden. University, and Areta on an equality as regards championship points. EDENDALE V. MOUNT EDEN. The Mount Eden-Edendale Old Boys game opened with the latter team on the attack. The Mount Eden men wore kept pinned to their own goal for some time. Eventually they rallied and forced play down the field, but Edendale came back, a forward rush resulting in the ball coming to Wheeler, who found the net. Success only stimulated the promoted juniors, and attacks followed upon the Mount Eden goal in quick succession, Avery being; called upon to save several times, Eventually Grayson snapped at the ball as it rebounded from the goalkeeper, put it info the net, and half-time came with Edendale two to the good. The second spell opened with Mount Eden again on the defensive. Shortly, however, they _ rallied, and combined work saw them pressing, but no score resulted. The effort proved sporadic, and again Edendale came back with a bombardment of the Mount Eden foal. A penalty bully against Ilartleet saw )avis beat his man and net Edendcle's third goal. Play was fast from now on, the ball being transferred rapidly from quarter to Quarter.' Eventually an attack by A. Alexander gave Jansen a chance, which he accepted, scoring what proved to be Mount Eden's only goal, the game ending:— Edendale Old Boys 3 Mount 'Eden 1 Mr. I;. H. Norton controlled the game. ARETA V. UNIVERSITY. The game between Areta and University was responsible for as good an exhibition of hockey as has been seen at Remuera, for some tme. The first spell was characterised by a fast alternation of attack and defence, both teams transferring play from one end to the other at a moment's notice. Neither side wa,s able to pierce the solid defence of the other, a corner by University being the utmost concession that was made throughout jhe first spell. The second half .opened with -Areta taking the lion's share of the attack. Several attempts at the goal were stared off with difficulty, but eventually the blues worked play out of the danger zone. The pace livened up, and the ball was kept rapidly' on' the move. Then the students bore through and. worked play downfield, where Garrard, accepting' a chance, gave them a goal. Areta rushed the ball away straight from the bully, and Fletcher equalised.. He almost repeated his performance from the next bully, but just passed the post. From now up to almost the end Areta made desperate efforts to win. but the blues kept them out. In the last few moments of play University retaliated with effect, and had Areta on the defensive when the whistle went, leaving the score: Areta 1 Utafiversity 1 Mr. R. D. Bartleet refereed.
