APPEAL BY A TEACHER.
GRAMMAR SCHOOL STAFF.
EXTENSION 0? TIME GRANTED.
Ax application for an extension of time was made before the Military Service Board yesterday by George S. Colham, M.A, assistant master at the Auckland Grammar School. The appellant, who made an appeal on personal grounds, asked for leave fur two months in which to arrange family affairs.
Major Conlan intimated that Mr. J. W. Tibbs, headmaster of the Grammar School, wished to make an independent application for the exemption of appellant. Mr. Tibbs said the school required 501 assistant masters, and was now working] with 27. Fifteen of these held temporary I appointments to fill positions of masters now at the front. It was practically impossible to obtain masters. Three of the present masters, including Colham, were drawn in the recent ballot, and he intended to appeal for exemption for each of them until the end of the school year, the last day of November. He did not want to hinder men going, but it would be a great hardship to scholars and upset the work of the school if even one man were taken away. It was impossible to obtain masters during the school year, but there was a shifting round during the Christmas vaca- : tion, when the school would have to take j its chance of securing other masters. Mr. i Colham had charge of a form of 30 scholars 1 and was engaged in training boys for the ! intermediate examination. A breach in the ! system of tuition occasioned by the change lof masters would probably cause the ; scholars to fail in their examinations.
The chairman said the board would lay on one -side the personal aspect of Mr. Cclham's application. It felt that it could do nothing to reduce the efficiency of the school. Exemption would be granted until November 50.
