FRENCH BEAT BACK ENEMY ATTACK NEAR ST. QUENTIN.
GERMANS CLAIM GAINS ON THE CHEMIN DES DAMES. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, June 7. A communique states: Our violent fire stopped a strong attack at midnight on a front of 650 yds, north-west of St. Quentin. We inflicted very heavy losses on the enemy. The survivors fled back to their trenches. Very lively artillery fighting is in progress south of Filain, north of the Chemin des Dames. (Received 12.10 a.m.) PARIS. June 8. A later French communique states that the artillery struggle has been fairly violent on the Chemin des Dames, notably south of Filain. A German communique states: We captured French positions on the Chemin des Dames, southward of Pargny-Filain, on a front of a mile and a-quarter, repulsing counter-attacks. We took 557 English prisoners.
