SUBMARINE DESTROYED.
OIL STEAMER'S SUCCESS. A. and N.Z. Cable. WASHINGTON, June 7.
Following a statement from Paris that the American steamer Silver Shell fought a submarine in the Mediterranean, the Navy Department states that the Silver Shell, and not tho Mongolia, wa= the vessel which yesterday reported the sinking of a submarine.
The Silver Shell is a vessel of 5836 tons, owned by the Shell Company of California, and used in carrying petrolenm in bulk.
The previous report was that the Department of State had been officially advised that the Mongolia sank a submarine. Tho ships fought for 90 minutes, and the Mongolia's 25th shot pierced the submarine. The stern of the submarine reared from the water and then she sank. The Navy Department is convinced that the submarine, which flew no flag, was sunk,,
