COSTLY GERMAN FAILURE NORTH OF THE AISNE.
TWO BATTALIONS ALMOST ENTIRELY DESTROYED. FRENCH HOLD SALIENT NORTH OF CHEMIN-DES-DAMES. Australian and N Z. Cable. (Received 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. A French communique states: After a very violent bombardment of our trenches north-west of Braye-en-Laonnois, the Germans launched three strong columns in assault on a salient of our line in a sector north of the Chcmin-des-Dames. In spite of sanguinary losses, after several attempts the Germans gained a footing at several points of our advanced trench- Immediate counter-attacks enabled us to retake the greater part. In the course of this attack two German battalions were almost entirely destroyed. In the region of Chevreux the enemy reacted solely by his artillery on the positions we conquered yesterday. We gained portion of Chevreux Wood. A later French report states: We considerably improved our position on Mont Comillet, in the Champagne, capturing 120 prisoners. There is intermittent artillery activity in the Champagne. French aeroplanes dropped bombs on Conflans, between Metz and Verdun, and elsewhere, doing considerable damage.
