WAIKATO RIVER DRAINAGE.

Sir,—The time has arrived .when it is highly important that every land owner from Kaitongata to the Maioro Bay, who is depending upon the Waikato River tc drain his property, should take a keen interest both in the present stale of the Waikato River and what is likely to come to pass in the near future. The drainage into the northern channel of the Waikato River has been gradually growing worse in the last two years. The groins placed across the northern channel for the purpos> of turning the current of the river pre in my opinion the cause of the shoaling and silting-up of the northern channel. The longer the groins are allowed to remain the further down the river the damage will sure'y be. Twelve thousand acres of highly-improved and rich alluvial land is worth an effort from all interested. It is very important that all the natural water-courses in the Lower Waikato River should remain open. I am convinced that they are absolutely necessary in helping the river to carry off the enormous body of flood-waters, and ensuring the taw-lying .and valuable lands of Akaaka, Awaroa, and Otatia against being flooded. Old Settler.
