The Auckland military district was asked to despatch 173 recruits to camp yesterday, but only 45 were available. Of these No. 1 group sent 25 out of 98 asked for. No. '?, group 1 out of 45. No. 5 group 10 out of 17, No. 4 gn>ap 9 out of 14. The troops kit by the mid-day Main Trunk ticin in charge of Lieutenant J. C. Holland.

In view of the serious shortages in camp, the general poor response in recruiting, and the inability of the authorities to apply the ballot for filling up the twenty-third reinforcements, which will be mobilised a fortnight hence, the Defence Office staffs throughout the Dominion are concentrating on recruiting. Staff sergeantmajors are being sent out as special recruiting agents, and are now engaged in busily canvassing the various districts to which they have been allocated. They are mounted and wear red, white and "blue streamers from their caps. After the new system was inaugurated yesterday in Wellington City, a cavalcade of five recruiting sergeants rode out from the barracks towards mid-day and entered upon a systematic canvass of the city and suburbs, each man being told off for a particular area. The business section of the city is also receiving attention. Interviewed at Palmerston North yesterday, Lieutenant-Colonel Hume, commanding the Wellington military district, stated that all permanent " staff ser-geant-majors were now recruiting officers, and if any information was needed regardins recruiting matters a person only required to question these officers. These officers could be depended on. and he looked for good response from the canvass.
