GRADUAL ALLIED PROGRESS
PORTUGUESE IN MACEDONIA
FRENCH SUCCESS ON THE SOMME
Russian reinforcements are reaching the Transylvanian front, where the fighting is fiercest round the mouth of Precteal Pass. There are indications that the enemy columns are losing their mobility owing to forced marches and to leaving their railway system behind, The French have captured a system of enemy trenches northwest of Sailry-Saillise!, north of the Somme. The Germans have made repeated attacks from Biaches to La Maisonette, and one of these penetrated a portion of the French first line north of La Maisonette. The allies continue to make gradual progress towards Monastir. They were compelled by bad weather to suspend their operations, but as soon as the weather cleared the Servians advanced half=a=mile towards Novak Ridge, which is described as the side door to Monastir. A German report states that a Portuguese contingent is included in the allied army in Macedonia. The British steamer Marina was sunk by a submarine off the Irish coast. A number of Americans were on board. A plot organised by the Austrian authorities in 1915 to assassinate the Roumanian Premier and other Ministers has
