NATIONAL RESERVE.

SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT.

Th~e promenade concert held i:; the j Town Hall last night in aid of j the Women's National Reserve Fund j was one of the most successful I of its kind that has yet been given. j The hall and gallery were crowded, and j the programme was followed with closest j interest from start to finish by an enthu- : siatie audience. The selections given j by the Orphans' Club orchestra were much j enjoyed, and songs by Mrs. Maguire. j Messrs. Alex. Connell and Wallace Atkinson were warmly applauded. Mr. Madi- ; son Cardon gave a fine dramatic recita- ; tion. The remaining items on the pro- j gramme were dances by pupils of Miss i Cecil Hall, and an exhibition of fire-club swinging by Mr. Potter, while Miss Aileen Moore acted as solo pianist. The dances I were most successful, one being a military j ballet danced by half a dozen very small j girls. The dance " Tarantella." was a ! most spirited and graceful item. Towards | the close of the evening, a patriotic song was given by three small children, during! which a Union Jack, laid in the centre of the hall, became the target for a regular fusillade of pennies from the audience. One of the features of the evening was a tug-of-war between twelve ladies arid eight gentlemen, which resulted in a victory for the ladies. The tea-room arrangements were in charge of Mrs. K. Mackay. and the table? were crowded during the greater part of the evening. The.funds wero also augmented by the sale of sweets and other dainties, members of the Reserve acting as vendors.
