PONSONBY SCHOOLS.

The Ponsonbv Schools Committee met on Monday evening, there being present:— Messrs. R. H- Swales (chairman), T. Vivian. G. C- Codlin, W. J. Campbell, G. S. Bullen, V. Langsford, W. A- Thompson, G. H. Lethahy, and W. Lambourne. The question of corporal punishment in the schools came up for discussion owing to a complaint made by a parent with it-card to the punishment of his daughter. The opinion was generally expressed bv the committee that it would be in the best interests of the schools if headmasters did not delegate their authority to assistants to inflict corporal punishment on girls or on hoys in the lower standards. As the council did not send m the usual account for the first J quarter of the year it was concluded bv the committee that the council's resolution came into operation as soon as made ' rim committee framed its estimates accordingly, but a water account for sir months' supply received from the council upset the committee's calculations.
