CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
WATERWAYS COMMISSION. At the meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday it was decided to postpone any further action regarding the reconstitution of the Inland Waterways Commission, in view of the fact that the Prime Minister had stated in the House that the question would be taken up by the Government during the recess. The following members were present :—- Messrs. E. Anderson, president, L. .T. Bagnall, H. W. Hudson. L. A. Longuet, E. C. Browne, J. M. Clark, and J. H. Upton. The General Manager of the New Zealand Railways asked the Chamber s assistance in circulating poster stamps issued by the Department, with the object of advertising the Dominion. It. was decided to ask the Department to send a representative to the various merchants, with a view to the stamps being purchased. A circular was read from the Anti-Ger-man League, Hawke's Bay, asking support to the. Naturalised Subjects Franchise Bill submitted to Parliament. It was decided to "receive the circular." The. < omptroller erf Customs wrote stating that lists of firms arid persons with whom trading is prohibited are obtainable on application to liini. The secretary said the names could now be obtained from the Customs House. A copy of the list was also available for inspection at the office of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mi'- C. Seegner sent a letter resigning his position as a member of the Chamber. The chairman, referring to the. Inland Waterways Commission, said that as a result of .representations made by some outside bodies interested in the matter, a telegram was sent to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Railways, and the Minister for Internal Affairs, asking them that, as the matter was of sue]} great importance to Auckland, to consider the proposed reconstitution of the body.. A replv "w as sent to the effect that the question would receive the careful consideration of the Government. Since then it had been mentioned in the House, a.nd the Prime Minister had promised that it would he taken up during the recess. The secretary of the. Fleet Committee. London, established by the Chamber of Commerce there, wrote soliciting a subscription towards the_ purchase of newspapers, etc.. for the men of the Grand Fleet- No action was taken in the matter. _
