EDUCATION OF GIRLS.
■_-*—— I GRAMMAR' SCHOOL PUPIL! ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM. PROPOSED EPSOM SCHOOL. The difficulty tlio Board of Governors o the Auckland Grammar School is experi encing in regard to finding accommodatioi for the increasing number of girl pupili in tho Howo Street school was explainec So tho Minister for Education, the Hon J.. A- Hanan, last evening by the deputy chairman of tho board, Professor A. P. W Thomas. The position, said Professor Thomas was that tho Howo Street schon'. had be come totally inadequate r accommodati the increasing number of pupils. Some o the rooms in tho building should not b< used on account of being damp. Then was no suitable place to orectnow building! on the Howo Street site. Tho board coulc erect a detached building, but this woulc not be satisfactory. The board had an on dowment property at Epsom and it hac been decidod to erect a school there. II was thought that by so doing many chil dren would not be compelled to travel suet long distances each day as Epsom was neai the railway line, and pupils coming in iron the country would bo ablo to leavo the train at Newmarket. Tito board had the site, and, as it was wartime, it did not contemplate asking the Department for a grant towards tho cost of erection of new buildings. Tho site was an excellent one in every way, and was superior to the Howe Street site. Certain buildings were necessary, but it was not anticipated that the cost of the work would exceed £1600. Later on, aftor tho war, the board Itopcd to erect a school in brick or concrete. Tho board did not propofo to ask tho Department for anything except its approval of the proposed buildings, and ilso*to be allowed to deduct tho cost .of the work——from the net annual ncoino from the board's endowments, in iccordance with the section of the Act. The Minister promised to look into tho natter, and, in the meantime, ho asked Professor Thomas to furnish him with a ull statement of tho board's position in •egard to tho matter.
