RECRUITING POSITION.
STATEMENT NEXT WEEK. QUESTION IN THE LORDS. DEBATE IN BOTH CHAMBERS. Received April 14, 11.30 p.m.) London, April 13. The Prime Minister Btated in the House of Commons that he hoped to announce next week the results of an examination of the recruiting figures and of the numbers obtainable by means of general compulsion. Many military officers, Mr. Reginald McKenna, Lord Lansdowne and Mr. Austin Chamberlain attended a meeting of a committee of the Cabinet which is examining the recruiting position. The Pall Mall Gazette believes that unless an extraordinary and unexpected change occurs in the situation, the Cabinet will decide in the meantime against extending compulsion to married men. Viscount Milner has given notice to move in the House of Lords in favour of general compulsion being introduced without delay. Thus the question will be debated both in the House of Lords and the House of Commons before Easter.
