NOTES BY PHAETON. A R.C. EASTER HANDICAP. The final payment for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, whioh fell due last night, did not have the effect of seriously reducing the list, and with 16 horses still engaged everything points to a fine field going into Mr. O'Connor's hands to contest the mile race. A pleasing fact to note in connection with the acceptance list is that Chortle, who Mr. Morse .appropriately selected to head the list is still engaged, and it may be now taken as certain that the big son of Multifid will be given an opportunity to again distinguish himself at Elleralie. That Chortle is in a fair position to reproduce his best form he afforded solid proof-at Awapuni on Thursday, when ho carried 9st 111b to victory in the Borough Handicap. Fit and well, Chortle can gallop a mile in great style, and his appearance on the scene will bo awaited with a very keen interest. King Lupin being trained in the Waikato the condition of the white-faced chestnut betakes pretty much of the sealed-letter order, so far as those outside the Hautapu stablo are concerned. Tho Lupin gelding is, however, in good favour, and from that we may assume that the stable views matters connected with the Easter Handicap in an optimistic vein. Colonel Soult is holding his condition splendidly, and having satisfied the course watchers that he is right at the top of his form he is more likely to increase rather than lose admirers. The fact that as a rule "The Colonel" does not find his stride quickly is against him in a race limited to a milo; uut there are to be found those who consider that the bay gelding is improving in thnf respect. Colonel Soult will. I think, be found moving along when a lot of the field is wearying of the struggle. The Gisbqrne owned Multiplication, who hails from the same stable as Chortle, is well spoken of; and Downham hi also a number of friends. Tact and House sifo are a, brace of lightweights that aw having their prospects Warmly espoused. In some quarters there is a tendency to sound the claims of the latter in a particularly high key, but it is a little difficult to follow tho reasoning. The Australian filly certainly won tho Taumarunui Cup; but the Taumarunui Cup and the AR.C. Easter Handicap are two vory different questions. Housewife is being trained at Takapuna, but it is understood she will finish ho? preparation at Elleralie, and if such eventuates then additional light should ho available to assist in summing up her prospects in, a satisfactory manner.

THE TAKAPUNA RACECOURSE.

It will be remembered that some time back the committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club effected the purchase of the block of land from the Auckland Harbour Board known as Narrow Neck, situate on the north side of their racecourse, at a cost of £6000. with a view to extending the race track. Plans of an extensive scale of works were drawn up last year by the club's engineer, Mr. Lockio Gannon, but lor various reasons the prosecution of.the work was postponed. Matters having been now adjusted, the club hayo started the works, and while rambling at the North Bhore one day during the present week I noticed a big staff of workmen, horses, drays, and levellers very busily engaged. A large portion of too bolt of trees which has stood for so many years on the northern boundary has already been felled, and, it was easily discernible that vigorous action is a pointed instruction by the committee, who are having the work done by day labour. The plans drawn up and approved provide tor the extension of the race track to slightly over eight furlongs, and with the additional land new available this will allow of a remodelling of the whole of the track, not the least important of which will be improvement m ! the approach to the various turns./ It is only by a perusal of the plans drawn, up that anything like a comprehensive idea can be formed of the task which the TJ.C. has lourageously entereed upon, and which will, it is estimated, cost something like £4500 Tho filling in- of the low-lying swampy land alone means in itself an extensivo piece of work, for to bring the new ground, xip to the proper level this means raising the same 2ft 6in. Taking, full advantage of the fine weather, the work » to bo pushed on with all vigour, but we are not fat away from the winter, and with tho approach of tho wet season, the work will, of course, be affected. Under favour, able conditions it may be possiblo to use a portion of the nowly-made course next season, but, recognising tho magnitude of tho work and tho difficulties to be surmounted mo the completed stage is reached, the full effect of the great transformation will not bo witnessed for some time beyond the period named. When the new racecourse, is an accomplished fact the gatherings held at the North Shore under the auspices of the Takapuna Jockey Club will bo further greatly popularised.

NEW SOUTH WALES AND THE TOTALIZATOR. The Labour caucus which holds sway in Sydney has played a bis part m making Ministries and moulding legislation; but though the organisation doclared in favour of the legalisation of the totalisator in tho mother State of the Commoßwealth. the Premier. Mr. W. H. Holman, who ha,* never left it open to doubt that ho was opposed to such a course, absolutely declined to introduce as a Government measure a Bill eking effect to the wishes of a majority of the caucus. It was, therefore, left to a private member to introduce a Totalisator Bill in tho New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Mr. Holman having promised to give the Bill the necessary facilities, this encouraged tho agitators for a'change in betting methods; but the measure was thrown out on the second reading, so that the pencillcrs will, for the present, be left in complete possession of the field. Various proprietary interests have, no doubt, played a part in securing tho defeat of the Bill, for it is generally acknowledged that if the totalisator were legalised, the proprietary clubs would .be cut out. In the face of this, it ib sot difficult to recognise that those in favour of the totalisator are likely to be confronted with a very stiff opposition right through. No doubt those who are engaged in tho agitation for the legalisation of tho machine «in New South Wales will continue to marshal force for a fresh trial of strength at ft future date; but in view of all the circumstances ruling, tho summingup of the well-versed "Pilot," in tho Referee, that the legalisation of the totalisator in the State named is yet a very long way off would appear to be based on solid grounds.

OXENHOPE'B PROSPECTS. On all ß hands Oxenhope is given unstinted praise for his win in the Thompson Handicap, and a solid opinion is expressed that the chestnut son of Ohligado and Cyrenicnne has yet to play his best card. Despite the fact of Oxenhopo having incurred a Hlb penalty for the Great Easter Handicap and Great Autumn Handicap, Oxenhope has been accepted for in both of those events; and, what is more, his chance is respected in each race. Jf Oxonhopo succeeds in winning the double event at Kiccarton at the approaching autumn meeting, such will form a very interesting incident in the season's racing.

. AVONDALE AUTUMN MEETING. Bad 'Mr, Harry Hayr been denied the pleasing 1 task of compiling an extensive list of entries in connection with the ap)?roa.ching autumn meeting, to bo held undsr the auspices df the Avondale Jockey Club, such would have constituted a surprise, for with the good sum of £2045 offered in prize money there was something of an attractive order to claim the attention of horseowners. From the oniric's appearing in another column it will bo Been that matters .augur, extremely well for the A.J.C. to have another record gathering when the autumn'meeting at the western suburb comes round on April 26 and 29.

LEAVES .FROM- MY NOTEBOOK., For many years now Mr. Spencer Gollan has simply been known' by name in New Zealand (the land of his birth), and the fact of his colours not having .been sported much in the Old Country ot late, references to the ex-New Zealander's racing ventures have not .figured largely in the sporting prints. London papers to hand state that in January Mr. Gollan supplied the winner ot the hour.year.old Handicap wth the Tho himkin, by Ladas—Biro, New Zealandcrs will not, of course, reouire to be told thut it was Mr. Gollan'a colours that the New Zealand-bred Moifaa carried to victory in the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase when that much-coveted raco fell to the bis son of Natator and Denbigh in. 1904.

The Grafton-Pretly Nell colt Cetigne, who won the AJ.C. Derby and who subsequently ran second to Patrbbas for the V.R.C Derby, made a satisfactory. reappearance on the scene on the 7th inst, when he carried 9jt 31b to victory in the April Handicap (one mile and a-quarter) at Rosehill. It is a popular opinion, that Cetigne has a good chance of turning the tables' on Patrobas when the pair come to contest' the St. Leger at Bandwick on the 22nd inst.

Tho New Zealand-bred Cherubim has been made to pay the full penalty for his winning feat in connection with the Australian Cup, run at Flemington last month. The son of Martian and Grand Opera has the post of honour in the Onkaparinga Cup, with 9st 12lb opposite his name

Beau Soult (by Scult-Our Lady), who it was thought would win a good race at three years old in Australia, but who unfortunately developed unsoundness, has again proved untrainable, and any future honours that come to. him will have to be gained as a sire.

Tho supporters of Desert Gold in the Manawatu Stakes on Thursday last must have felt rather uneasy when the crack filly appeared to be hemmed in just prior to the nome turn. However, once she cot free the daughter of All Aurariua made the others look very cheap.

Harbour Light, who won the Hack Welter at .Swapuni on. Thursday last, was a big order with northerners, though the defeat of Ring Lupin earlier in the afternoon was a very costly transaction for those who imagined the chestnut an unbeatable proposition in hack company over five furlongs.

NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. Royal Arms, who has been indulging in useful work at Elleralie since his arrival, looks as if he will bo all the better toe a, race, but, as the Brighton Hurdle handicap is a week off yet, J. George's chargo can be relied upon to become more hardened, in. the meantime. After Working on the tan yesterday, with Traill in the saddle, the son of Royal Artillery sweated profusely. He was wearing protectors on his forelegs, but was apparently quite sound. Word comes from Ngaruawahia. that Bpalperion has been doing exceptionally wijll in his work. The chestnut would only require to be in the same condition as, wh<m he showed a fleet pair of heels to, a fitild ot fencers at Ellerslie last Christmas to keep the opposition in the Brighton Hurdle Race busy for most part of the journey next Saturday. Quite a number of usually sound judges have been supporting his prospects during the past week. Despite the fact that several A.R.C. Easter Handicap candidates are coming into favour, it is, noticeable that. Housewife retains her position in market quotations, and it is quite clear that those doing business over the mile event are not disposed to take any liberties with tho three-year-old daughter of Kenilworth—Busy Bee. Housewife is credited with training on well since she won the Taumarunui Cup on the Ist inst, J. George brought a rair of two-year-olds north with him during the week. Both are. bay colts, one being a half-brother to Crown Pearl by King Rufus and the other a half brother to Labour Day, a big youngster by Elevation. They will be seen out at the Avondale meeting. The half-brother to Crown Pearl, is known as Royal Red. Glenroy and Crqwn Pearl both present! the appe&rance of having indulged in constant, work of late. Glonroy still gives one to* impression when walking that he suffers from soreness, but in reality that peculiarity is said to be an ambling habit ho has adopted. It is intended to put Crown Pearl over the fences shortly. Centenary and Rome have been stationed at Elleralie during the past week indulging in useful work. Centenary was schooled the other day with R. Silk in the saddle and shaped well. Borne is by Hierarch from Golden Rose, and may turn out useful later on. Both will be seen out at A\>mdale. To Onga's form during tho Easter meetingis eagerly awaited. There is diversity of opinion as to whether he will come back to his best, fie is looking particularly bright just at presout, and has oeen indulged in a very patiout, preparation, for soma consider able time. Hadj is a moody customer, and only gallops when he feels inclind,. so that it occasioned no surprise to note him stop to a, standstill while being exercised on. Thursday morning. His rider experienced some difficulty in porsuading him to complete the task set him. All the Gisborne-trained candidates engaged at the Ellerslie Easter meeting arrived by the To Anau from the South yesterday. v They included Downham, Hexton, Carlysian, Multifual. Anxious, and Bravest. Tararu Jack was a very strong order, with Aucklanders for his h.urdle engagements at Awapuni. As he finished second and first respectively, and returned more than the money back when he ran second, his supporters came out on the right aide oC the

Goldsizo covered the best part of a mile and a-quarter at a sound pace on Thursday. It took about 2m 4s to negotiate the last circuit, with Fisher joining in on the journey. The effort was noteworthy and proved that Chaofe'a charge is far from a back number. To Papapa has not been worked over a lengthy course of late, but the Groat Northern Guineas heroine has been spnutine nicely and finishing on well each morning she is worked. She finished awod of Delenda on Thursday. Anrore, who finished second to Interlude in the Hack Handicap at Awapuni on Thursday, after having to make tip a lot of leeway, is referred to by keen judges as a very promising member of/ the Karamu stable. - Cultriform and Signo became parted in the fog on Thursday, for which reason little importance can be attached to the fact that the two-year-old' finished well ahead of the Soult mare at the close of their sprint. Sea De'il, who will be on hand to prevent anything in the nature of a. walk-over in tha St. Lcger at Bllerslie, was indulged inuseful work at headquarters yesterday morning. Spalfish was indulged in very useful work on the Band last Thursday morning and promises to be somewhere near his best to complete his engagements near at hand. Fionnuala and Kiriwinning were sprinted together on Thursday morning, though they were not asked' to go very fast. They worked from the new five-furlong post.

Pateonga had the best of, a companion at the closo of a sprint outside the trestles on Thursday "last. The Marble Arch—Chiara representative is very well just at present. - Some very interesting work should be witnessed at headquarters this morning- Most of the visitors are expected to put in an, appcaranco before Tuesday next. There is no decided favourite ruling for the Brighton Hurdle Race at present, tnmigh. Spalfisli and Royal Arms are both being consistently supported of lute.

The Marble Pretoria representative in Macmanemin'S stable was noticed working at a sound pace on Thursday morning beforo tho breakfast hour. Homeric and Sir Ralph were sprinted in company over a few furlongs last Thursday morning. There was little between the pair at the close. Merry Roe appeared to bo doing better than Self at the close of a gallop on Thursday last. The former is on the improve at presentKitty Bellairs mado fast time over four furlongs outside the trestles on Thursday morning. The Obligada mare is on the improve. It is stated on good authority that King Lupin is going on the right way and is likely to strip at his best next Saturday. Mullingar and Harlestone finished together at the close of their work last Thursday morning, ' the former pleasing most. . - Try Fluke and Loloma were companions on the sand track last Thursday, both hitting out freely without being after time. Colonel Soult, indulged in long work on Thursday morning, tho, last seven furlongs being negotiated in fair time. Tararu Jack has entailed a Ifllb penalty' for the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie by reason of his victory at Awapuni.
