U MISCELLANEOUS PICTURES. j A BEJtAHKABLT fine series of photographs U- connected with the arrest of the Maori • N "prophet" forms the leading feature of * s to day's issue of the Auckland Weekly News. The photographs were taken by , a special photographer of the Weekly News staff, who accompanied the police expedition, and was in close touch while ' the fighting was proceeding between the ~ police and the Maoris. These pictures - graphically record the successful efforts ; of the authorities to quell disaffection in >.?. the re wen Country, and will serve as an . interesting memento of a most exciting a- episode. v The police, with their packhorses, are shewn marching through the almost trackless Urewera Country, fordL. ing streams, and encountering other difficulties on the way to the stronghold at Maungapohatu. At. Ruatahuna, 25 miles • distant, arms and ammunition were served %: out to the polic-j force, and a fine pano- ' ramic view shows this operation in proC gress. A realistic picture shows some of the police firings at the attacking fL Maoris, while another depicts members *■ iterating the prophet's" house. In anui other photograph some of the wives and f children of Rua .being led to cover by the £ police during the tiring can be seen. Con- §>' stable Wright, of Hamilton, who was If severely wounded with gunshot, is de|f picted while being assisted from the firing §1- area by comrades. Rua, handcuffed with ff. Id's son Whatu, together with other Maori ■ prisoners, appears under & guard of police. I In another picture Rue, is being held !'• down by his captors, with the firing still in progress. Several other photographs complete a striking series. In the numf ber there are also other interesting features, including the latest war photoJ graphs, the arrival of the Aurora from | the Antarctic regions, and topical carsi toons. Those who require copies should send in their orders at once, as it will be !" impracticable to print a further edition. =====
