NEWS OF AUCKLANDERS.

RECENT PROMOTIONS. [FItOM ora OWN cobkesfondent.] London, October 29. Soon after Dr. L. E. Barnett, or Dunedin, arrived in London he was given a commission as captain in the R.A.M.C., and was sent to Malta. The War Office has allowed the termination of the contract with tile R.A.M.C., and now Dr. Barnett is at the New Zealand General Hospital, Bont de Koubbeh, Cairo, with the rank of major in the New Zealand Medical Corps. He was telegraphed for to take the place of Major Savage, whose death at Cairo was greatly deplored. Major Barnett has charge of the surgical division in the hospital, which has accommodation for 1000 patients, though in the middle of this month the majority of the 850 inmates we.e suffering from illnesses. En route from Malta, a call was made at Lemnos and Imbros, and it wa3 possible to obtain a distant view of bombardments; it was not possible for him to land at Gallipoli, being in charge of a sick convoy, but he was able to see his son, who has been a member of the New Zealand Field Ambulance since the beginning of the war. Unluckily, since then, the latter has been laid up at No. 3 Canadian Hospital, Lemnos, suffering from typhoid fever; latest reports are that his progress is quite satisfactory, and hopes are entertained that he will be sent to Cairo for the convalescent stage.

Captain A. E. Marsack, R.A.M.C, of Remuera, has, since the middle of Jnne I last, been attached to the Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, in charge of a surgical ward, and in addition to this he has been given charge of the Tnnbridge Wells group of hospitals and auxiliary hospitals with beds placed at the disposal of the War Office and taken over officially. In the Tnnbridge Wells group of hospitals there are four civil institutions (including the general), and fifteen voluntary aid hospitals, some of them some distance away, namely, at Tonbridge, Pernbury, Frant, Southborough. Leigh, LaJ-g----ton, Ruathall, Bidborough, arid Goudhurst. For some time Captain Marseck had charge of wounded prisoners of war. Mr. J. W. Gorrie, of Epsom, who has been training with the Inns of Court 0.T.C., at Berkhamsted, has received a commission in the 3rd Line, 7th Worcestershire Regiment, stationed at Malvern Wells. • Mr. Ray L. Price, of Auckland, has obtained leave from New Zealand to take up work with the British Red Cross Society, and expects to be sent to France shortly. Just now he is in Herefordshire with friends. Miss Minnie Mendelssohn, of Auckland, who came to offer her services, has accepted a position on the staff of the New End Hospital, Hampstead Heath. A New Zealand nurse leaving to-day for France is Miss Rawlings, who has joined the French Flag Nursing Corps, now working in French military hospitals, under the Government. One of the privileges offered by this nursing corps is a three weeks' respite at the end of six months' work. Lieutenant M. M. Morrison, R.A.M.C., of Warkworth, Auckland, is now medical officer of the 187 th Brigade, R.F.A., and is posted for foreign service. At present he is at , Witley Camp, in Surrey. Second-Lieutenant (on probation) H. W. Butterworth, of Auckland, Royal Flying Corps, military wing, is confirmed in rank. Mr. Butterworth arrived from Auckland in May, and took his pilot's certificate in June, obtaining his commission the following month. Lieutenant Eric H. Goodfellow, R.F.A., of Auckland, is among the wounded in to-day's casualty list. At the outbreak of war he served at the Australian Field Hospital in France, and got his commission in the R.F.A. last December. Mr. Goodfellow was studying medicine at Edinburgh. Sergeant 0. F. Seaward, 4th, Auckland, Mounted Rifles, Main Body, is at present convalescing from wounds received in the Dardanelles at the end of August. He has been at Stanley Wood House, Amersham, Bucks, but hopes to come up to London for a few weeks and go "into it" again fairly soon-
