COMMONWEALTH'S DUTY. PREMIER'S STRAIGHT TALK. (Received December 10, 11 p.m.) Brisbane, December 10. The Federal Prime Minister, Mr. W. M. Hughes, replying to the Industrial Council's demand for the withdrawal of the recruiting scheme, said he resented strongly anything in the shape of a threat. He said he feared they did not realise the gravity of the issues at stake. They spoke as if they had some means of preserving their liberty by an attitude of indifference and aloofness to the war. Mr. Andrew Fisher, when Prime Minister, had pledged the party to support the Empire to the last man and the last shilling. The Government had been elected to power on that policy, and he was going to carry it out. After further straight talk, Mr. Hughes said he could not understand the Council taking its present action. No conscription would be introduced'without Parliament being given an opportunity of stating its opinion. Information in the possession of the Government fully warranted the steps taken. PASSPORT SYSTEM. NEW ZEALAND TRAVELLERS. (Received December 10, 11 p.m.) Sydney, December 10. It is officially notified that a simplified passport system for bona-fide travellers to New Zealand is being arranged. IMPOSTORS IN UNIFORM. ; SEVENTY-FIVE MEN CAUGHT. Sydney, December 10. A military raid in the city resulted in the capture of 75 men who had no right to wear the uniform. i ENEMY GOODS. STRINGENT RESTRICTIONS. Melbourne, December 10. A proclamation has been issued further restricting the importation of enemy goods, and even goods imported through neutrals. The law has been made more rigid than the law of Britain, and will even affect goods imported into Britain under license and exported again to Australia. WAR-TIME MARRIAGES. ABNORMAL INCREASE. Sydney, December 10. A New Zealand message referring to the recent increase in the mar-riage-rate finds an echo in the Commonwealth.
