(The caskets and addresses which are to ,'be presented by Auckland subscribers to General Louis Botha* Prime Minister of , South Africa, and his colleague, General IJ. C. Smuts, Minister for Defence, are I now ready for despatch to South Africa. It was decided some months ago to raako the presentation as representing Auckland's admiration of the achievement in conquering German South-West Africa. The address to General Botha is lettered on vellum, bound in blue and red leather. The front cover Dears an illumination, including the rose, shamrock, and thistle, the maple leaf and national emblems of other Overseas Dominions. A representation of the arms of Great Britain and the Union of South Africa precedes the address. The gold lettering of the preamble is on a blue surface, on J which is shown the manuka and various ,Aew Zealand flowers, and the Dominion coat-of-arms. On certain pages, the name | of the various important parts of the British Empire anoear on handsome escutcheons. The casket stands on a base of three New Zealand woods—rewarewa, Wairangi purau, and wavy manuka. | Above is a, block of greenstone on silver feet, and the silver casket itself is ornamented with the Dominion coat-of-arms, a carved Maori whare, and the South African and New Zealand flags crossed. Other ornamentations include representations of fern leaves, kiwis, and tikis in .silver. On the lid of the casket ia a I mounted trooper in solid gold, and at either end. seated, is a model of a trooper The monogram of the recipient is done in gold, and gold-bordered panels bear representations of Mount Egmont and Mitre Peak. The address to be presented to General Snmts is also a fine piece of work, and the silver casket is in keening, the ornamentations in each case settimr forth the special characteristics of New Zealand The addresses are signed by the Mayor.
