WATER FOR THE CITY

AN AMPLE SUPPLY. ASSURANCE BY THE MAYOR. " Thebe is no danger of a shortage of water in Auckland," said the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, yesterday, in reply to a question. " There is more water in the Waitakere ranges at present than the waterworks engineer has known for very many years. As a matter of fact, there is very little likelihood of the council having to discontinue even street waterin with fresh water this summer. " Last week, there were 17.000,000 gallons of water per day running to waste at Waitakere and Western Springs. The city's daily consumption is 5,250,000 gallons. The pipe-line from Nihotupu and Waitakere will allow 15,000,000 gallons per day to be brought into the city. The present pipe-line and plant enable us to provide three times our present requirements. " The only question we have to deal with relates to storage. The large dam, for which a contract has been let, and on which work is well in hand, will provide, when completed, storage for 550,000,000 gallonsmore than double the capacity of the present Waitakere dam. " The survey of the Huia watershed is well advanced, and the council will be in a position very soon to consider the whole question of its future policy, so far as it relates to water supply."
