HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS.

EXCURSIONS BY RAIL AND BOAT.

In order to meet the extra traffic which is anticipated during the holidays the customary arrangements have been made by the Railway Department regarding the issue of excursion tickets. These will be obtainable at every railway station from December 17 to January 3, and will be available for the return journey up to and including February 17. An extra express train will leave Auckland for Wellington at 9.52 every night excepting Saturdays. A corresponding extra express will leave Wellington for Auckland daily, excepting Sundays, at 2 p.m. Hitherto the excursion fares have been charged on a basis of 2d per mile for first-class and lid per mile for second-class accommodation. This year the fares will "be slightly creased by the imposition erf a tax of per cent, provided for in the recent Budget. Thus the fares work out roughly at 2 l-5d per mile for first-class and lAd per mile for second-class, mileage being counted one way only. Reduced fares will also be obtainable on the Northern Steamship Company's boats, the company having completed arrangements for the issue of excursion tickets between December 13 and January 4. Trips will be made, in accordance with custom, to the various harbour resorts on Boxing Day, New Year's Day, and January 3. The Ferry Company intends to adhere to its ordinary time-table, but will run excursions to places, such as Rangitoto and Kohimarama, within easy distance of the city. All the mere important offices in fhe city will be closed for a few days at Christmas and the New Year.
