ALL THE GROUND WON ON 13TH INST. HELD.
% IMPORTANT SUCCESS NORTH-EAST OF VERMELLES.
(Received October 17. 10 p.m.)
London, October 16.
The following report has been received from Sir John French: "With reference to the German communique, the only change in the situation south of La Bassee Canal is that we have further improved our position in the Hohenzollern redoubt. We hold all the ground gained on the nth inst."
A message from Paris states thai, an important British success was achieved between Ypres and Loos on Wednesday night, after the most severe fighting. There was a temporary check through a German counter-attack. The British, aided by excellent artillery preparation, then attacked north-east of Vermelles, and captured several trenches.
•Si. John French, in his report on the recent advance, said: "The First and Fourth Army Corps, on the morning of September 25, carried the enemy's first and most powerful line of entrenchments, extending on our extreme right flank from Grenay to a point north of the Hohenzollern Redoubt, a distance of 6500 yds. The position was exceptionally strong, consisting of a double line, including large redoubts, and was a network of trenches, bomb-proof shelters, and large dugouts, in some cases 30ft below the ground.*' Portion of the Hohenzollern Redoubt was afterwards recaptured by the enemy.
