HEROISM AT GALLIPOLI.
VICTORIA CROSSES WON.
RESCUE OF WOUNDED MEN. London, October 1. Captain Hansen, of the Sixth Lincolnshires, in the new army, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry on August 9 at Yilghi Burnu, Gallipoli. The Lincolnshires were forced to retire, leaving their wounded, owing to intense heat from the scrub which had been set on fire. Captain Hansen and three or four volunteers dashed several times over 400 yds of open ground under a terrific fire and rescued six wounded men from inevitable death by burning. Private Potts, of the Berkshire Yeomanry has also been decorated h J*? 7-9' Although severely wounded during the fighting at Hill 70 near Suvla Bay, he remained for 43 hours under the Turkish trenches with a wounded private who was unable to move. Finally using a shovel as a sledge, Potts dragged his compaman 600 yds to the British ' hues, being under fire from the Turks all the time.
