SALVATION ARMY CHAPLAIN.

Sir.—The correspondent who wrote in regard to the appointment of an assistant Salvation Army chaplain to the Trentham camp, evidently knows very little about the subject upon which he writes. He asks, •' Is there one per cent, of the men in camp who prefer to attend the Salvation Army as their place of worship?" In reply, I can give an affirmative answer. On a recent Sundav, out of one thousand men who attended Church parade in Trentham, eight hundred attended the Salvation Armv's service. Is it therefore any wonder that the Salvation Army, the "so-called Salvation Army," as your correspondent prefers to call it, has been compelled to appoint an assistant chaplain ? Observer. Barry Road, Waihi, September 22

. Sir.—Will yon allow me a little space in reply to letters in the Herald. My letter was not an attack on the Salvation Army, but simply an appeal for justice. It has been said there are ao.OOO members of the Salvation Army in the British Army. I accept the fiimres: tbev work out at less than 1 per cent, of the whole number. As to the social work of the Army. I have seen a great deal, both in England and New Zealand, since it h»gan as the " Christian Mission ' thirty-five or forty years ago. The two main points in my letter are unanswered— the implied failure of, e.g.. the Anglican and Presbyterian churches to supplv the men needed: secondly, the neglect or inability to , administer the sacraments. Honour to whom honour is due. I have heard of the zeal and devotedness of officers of the Salvation Army in ministering to the sick and wounded. £. C. Btn>r>. September 28, 1915.
